ADR Driver Exam key facts & eligibility
| Conducting body | UNECE publishes the ADR agreement; driver training courses and examinations are approved and supervised by the competent authority of each ADR Contracting Party (e.g. in Great Britain the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) runs the scheme for the Department for Transport; in Poland an examination commission acts under the voivodeship marshal) |
|---|---|
| Official website | unece.org — ADR 2025 ↗ |
| Mode | An approved classroom course (theory plus individual practical exercises covering at least first aid, fire-fighting and what to do in an incident) followed by an invigilated examination. ADR allows a written exam or a written-plus-oral exam, and written exams may be taken electronically. There is a basic course for all drivers plus optional specialisations for tanks, Class 1 explosives and Class 7 radioactive material. |
| Frequency | Year-round. The examination is held at the end of each approved course, on dates notified to the competent authority. |
| Scoring & marking | ADR sets minimums, not a pass mark. The initial basic exam must have at least 25 written questions and last at least 45 minutes; a basic exam after a refresher course needs at least 15 questions and 30 minutes. Each specialisation exam needs at least 15 questions and 30 minutes, or 10 questions and 20 minutes after a refresher (8.2.2.7). Question counts and pass marks are set nationally. In Poland, for example, the basic test has 30 single-choice questions in 60 minutes, the tank test has 18 questions in 40 minutes, the Class 1 and Class 7 tests each have 15 questions in 30 minutes, and you must answer at least 2/3 of each test correctly. |
| Score validity | The certificate is valid for five years from the date you pass the initial basic or comprehensive examination (8.2.2.8.2). It is renewed by refresher training and a refresher exam. If you renew in the 12 months before expiry, the new five years run from the old expiry date; if you renew earlier, they run from the date you pass the refresher exam. A specialisation added later expires on the same date as the certificate. |
| Language | The exam is set in the language(s) of the country that issues the certificate. The certificate is printed in the issuing country’s language and, if that is not English, French or German, its key titles also appear in one of those three languages (8.2.2.8.4). |
Who is eligible for ADR Driver Exam?
Drivers of vehicles carrying dangerous goods above the 1.1.3.6 small-load thresholds must hold an ADR driver training certificate (ADR 8.2.1.1). You must complete a course approved by the competent authority before sitting the exam. To sit a specialisation exam (tanks, Class 1 or Class 7) you must first have sat the basic exam and attended the specialisation course (8.2.2.7.2.1). Tank training is required for fixed or demountable tanks over 1 m³ and tank-containers over 3 m³. Other prerequisites, such as minimum age or licence category, are set nationally.

Expert take: what ADR Driver Exam really tests
The ADR driver training certificate is the licence-like credential that lets a driver carry dangerous goods by road under the UNECE ADR agreement. You earn it by completing an approved course and passing an examination supervised by the competent authority. Under ADR 8.2.2.8.2 it is valid for five years from the date you pass the initial basic exam, and it is renewed through refresher training and a shorter refresher exam. ADR sets a floor of at least 25 written questions in 45 minutes for the basic exam and at least 15 questions in 30 minutes for each specialisation (tanks, Class 1, Class 7), while each country sets its own pass mark. Under 8.2.1.6, a certificate issued in one Contracting Party is accepted in all the others while it is valid.
Preparation tips
- Learn the hazard identification number logic, not just a list: 3 means flammable liquid, 2 gas, 6 toxic and 8 corrosive. A doubled digit intensifies the hazard (33 is highly flammable), a 0 means the single hazard is enough (30), and a leading X means the substance reacts dangerously with water, so water may be used only with expert approval.
- Practise the 1.1.3.6 points sum until it is automatic: transport category 1 counts ×50, category 2 counts ×3, category 3 counts ×1, and the total must not exceed 1 000. Category 0 has no exemption and category 4 is unlimited.
- Read the four-page instructions in writing line by line. Questions on the first actions (brakes, engine off, battery master switch, no smoking or e-cigarettes, warning vest and signs, stay upwind, never fight a load-compartment fire) appear in almost every exam.
- For tunnel questions, work from the code: in (D/E), the first letter applies to tank or bulk carriage and the second letter to other carriage. So a petrol tanker (D/E) is barred from D and E tunnels, while orange-plated packages with the same code are barred only from E tunnels.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Mixing up the fire-extinguisher totals. The minimum is 4 kg for units up to 3.5 t, 8 kg for up to 7.5 t and 12 kg for over 7.5 t, always at least two extinguishers and at least one of 2 kg suitable for the engine or cab. A 1.1.3.6 small load needs only one 2 kg extinguisher.
- Assuming every ADR requirement disappears under 1.1.3.6. Orange plates, the instructions in writing and the driver certificate are lifted, but you still need a transport document, a 2 kg extinguisher and awareness training.
- Confusing labels with orange plates. Labels and placards (diamonds) show the class, while the orange plate shows the hazard identification number above the UN number. Empty uncleaned tanks keep both until they have been cleaned or degassed.
ADR Driver Exam study plan
A phase-by-phase roadmap from your first concept to test-ready. Stretch or compress each phase to fit the time you have before your attempt.
- What each class covers (1–9 and their divisions) and packing groups I/II/III
- Reading a Dangerous Goods List (Table A) entry: UN number, transport category, tunnel code and hazard number
- The basic-course syllabus in ADR 8.2.2.3.2
- Hazard identification numbers by heart: 33, 30, 336, 338, X423, 268, 263, 23, 22, 80, 88, 90, 99, 606, 70
- The X prefix, doubled digits and the 0 suffix; labels and placards
- Transport-document order (UN number, name, labels, packing group, tunnel code) and the four-page instructions in writing
- 1.1.3.6 points (×50 / ×3 / ×1, limit 1,000) and the fire-extinguisher table (4 kg / 8 kg / 12 kg by vehicle mass)
- Equipment (8.1.5), driver duties (8.3), supervision and parking (8.4)
- Tunnel categories and restriction codes, mixed loading and the 1.10 security rules
- Tanks: tank codes, filling limits, surge and empty-uncleaned-tank rules

Official practice: Attend the full approved course and its practical exercises, then learn ADR Part 5 (orange plates, hazard identification numbers, labels and documents), 1.1.3.6 (the points calculation), Chapter 8.1 (fire extinguishers and equipment), Chapter 8.3 (driver duties) and the instructions in writing. The question catalogue is kept by the competent authority, and candidates may not see the selected questions before the exam (8.2.2.7.1.3).
Previous-year papers: There are no official past papers. ADR requires that candidates have no prior knowledge of the questions selected from the national catalogue, so practice is limited to provider mock tests and the ADR text itself.

Frequently asked questions
- How many questions are in the ADR driver exam?
- ADR sets minimums and each country sets the exact paper. Under ADR 8.2.2.7 the initial basic exam has at least 25 written questions and lasts at least 45 minutes, and each specialisation exam (tanks, Class 1, Class 7) has at least 15 questions in 30 minutes. After a refresher course the minimums drop to 15 questions in 30 minutes for the basic exam and 10 questions in 20 minutes per specialisation.
- How long is an ADR driver training certificate valid?
- The ADR driver training certificate is valid for five years from the date you pass the initial basic examination (ADR 8.2.2.8.2). If you renew in the 12 months before it expires, the new five years run from the old expiry date; if you renew earlier, they run from the date you pass the refresher exam.
- What does the X before a hazard identification number mean?
- An X before the hazard identification number on an orange plate means the substance reacts dangerously with water, so water may be used only with the approval of experts. For example, sodium (UN 1428) carries X423.
- What do the digits of an ADR hazard number mean?
- The first digit gives the main hazard — 2 gas, 3 flammable liquid, 4 flammable solid, 5 oxidising, 6 toxic, 7 radioactive, 8 corrosive, 9 risk of spontaneous violent reaction. A doubled digit means the hazard is intensified (33 is a highly flammable liquid such as petrol, UN 1203), and a 0 as the second digit means one figure is enough to describe it (30 for diesel, UN 1202).
- Who runs the ADR exam?
- UNECE publishes the ADR agreement, but courses and exams are approved and supervised by the competent authority in each ADR country. In Great Britain the Scottish Qualifications Authority runs the scheme for the Department for Transport; in Poland an examination commission acts under the voivodeship marshal.
- When does a driver need an ADR certificate?
- A driver needs an ADR training certificate when carrying dangerous goods above the small-load thresholds of ADR 1.1.3.6 (ADR 8.2.1.1). Tank vehicles with fixed or demountable tanks over 1 m³ and tank-containers over 3 m³ also require the tank specialisation.
