IELTS Academic, jointly owned by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge, is the International English Language Testing System for university admission and professional registration. It has four sections — Listening (40 questions), Reading (40 questions), Writing (two tasks) and Speaking (a face-to-face interview with an examiner) — with Listening, Reading and Writing taken together in about 2 hours 45 minutes. Each section is reported on the 9-band scale (1–9 in half-band increments), and the Overall Band Score is the average of the four, rounded to the nearest half band. Results are valid for two years. (A separate IELTS General Training version exists for work and migration.)
