How to cover the MCAT syllabus

The MCAT, from the AAMC, is a standardised test required by most US and many Canadian medical schools, delivered at Pearson VUE. It has four sections — Chemical and Physical Foundations (59 questions), Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills (53), Biological and Biochemical Foundations (59) and Psychological, Social and Biological Foundations (59) — for 230 questions and roughly 7.5 hours of seated time. Each section is scored 118–132 and the four sum to 472–528. The AAMC sets no expiry; schools commonly accept scores for 2 to 3 years.

✅ Preparation tips

  • Build endurance — the seated time is about 7.5 hours.
  • Give CARS dedicated practice — it rewards technique.
  • Use the official AAMC full-length practice exams.

⚠️ Common mistakes

  • Under-practising CARS, which many find the hardest to raise.
  • Cramming content without full-length endurance practice.
