Format and Marking Criteria
12 min
A face-to-face interview marked on four criteria. Understand the three parts and what examiners score.
Three parts, eleven to fourteen minutes
Part 1 is an introduction and familiar-topic questions, Part 2 is a two-minute long turn from a cue card, and Part 3 is a discussion of abstract ideas linked to the Part 2 topic.
- Part 1: ~4-5 minutes of everyday questions
- Part 2: 1 minute to prepare, up to 2 minutes to speak
- Part 3: ~4-5 minutes of deeper discussion
The examiner cannot help you with ideas; treat every question as an invitation to say more.
The four criteria
You are scored on Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy, and Pronunciation, each worth 25%.
Key Takeaways
- The test has three parts and lasts 11 to 14 minutes
- Four equally weighted criteria decide the band
- Part 2 gives one minute to prepare a two-minute talk
