Expert take: what Test ADR (España) really tests
In Spain, drivers of vehicles carrying dangerous goods need the autorización especial ADR (often called the "carné ADR"), which is issued by the Dirección General de Tráfico. Candidates complete an approved course and then sit a written multiple-choice test at a Jefatura de Tráfico. Spanish training centres widely report that the basic test has 30 questions with a maximum of 3 errors allowed, and that the cisternas and explosivos extensions have 20 questions each with a maximum of 2 errors. The authorisation is valid for five years. It can be renewed with a refresher course and test, but only before it expires. The topics Spanish candidates search for most are the orange plate (panel naranja), especially what the X before the hazard number means, and the 1.1.3.6 "1000 puntos" calculation.
Preparation tips
- Learn the hazard-number logic rather than memorising codes. The first digit is the main hazard and a doubled digit means it is intensified. A trailing 0 means one digit is enough, and an X in front means the substance reacts dangerously with water, so water may only be used with the approval of experts.
- Practise the 1.1.3.6 calculation until it is automatic. Multiply transport category 1 by 50, category 2 by 3 and category 3 by 1, then check that the total does not exceed 1000 points.
- Know which plates and placards go where. Packages need plain orange plates front and rear. A tanker carrying one substance shows numbered plates front and rear. A multi-compartment tanker carrying different substances shows numbered side plates for each compartment, and tankers carry placas-etiquetas on both sides and at the rear.
- With only 3 errors allowed out of 30, aim for complete accuracy on the topics that come up most often: hazard numbers, labels, extinguisher sizes and the instrucciones escritas.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Confusing 33 (highly flammable liquid with a flash point below 23 °C, such as petrol) with 30 (flammable liquid with a flash point of 23–60 °C, such as diesel).
- Assuming the 1.1.3.6 exemption removes every obligation. The carta de porte and a 2 kg extinguisher are still required, as is basic awareness training under chapter 1.3.
- Letting the authorisation expire. In Spain an expired ADR authorisation cannot be renewed and has to be obtained again from scratch.
Test ADR (España) study plan
A phase-by-phase roadmap from your first concept to test-ready. Stretch or compress each phase to fit the time you have before your attempt.
- The nine ADR classes and their divisions (2.1/2.2/2.3, 4.1/4.2/4.3, 5.1/5.2, 6.1/6.2) and packing groups I–III
- Recognise every etiqueta de peligro by colour and symbol, including 4.3 (blue) and 5.2 (red/yellow)
- Special marks: limited quantities, environmentally hazardous substance (fish and tree), elevated temperature (red triangle)
- Panel naranja layout: hazard identification number on top, UN number below; 40 × 30 cm
- Digit logic: 2 gas, 3 flammable liquid, 4 flammable solid, 5 oxidizing, 6 toxic, 7 radioactive, 8 corrosive, 9 violent reaction; doubled digit = stronger hazard; X = reacts dangerously with water
- Common pairs: 33/1203 petrol, 30/1202 diesel, 23/1965 LPG, 268/1005 ammonia, 80/1830 sulphuric acid, X423/1428 sodium
- Carta de porte description order (UN, name, labels, packing group, tunnel code) and the four-page instrucciones escritas
- Extinguishers by vehicle mass, PPE per crew member, prohibiciones de carga en común
- 1.1.3.6 (×50 / ×3 / ×1, 1000-point limit), tunnel categories A–E, security under chapter 1.10
- Cisternas: 80 %/20 % filling rule, tank codes such as LGBF, earthing and FL/AT vehicles
- Explosivos: divisions 1.1–1.6, compatibility groups and the S1 rules; Radiactivos: transport index and categories I-BLANCA / II-AMARILLA / III-AMARILLA
- Full 30-question mock tests, aiming to make no more than 1–2 errors so you have a margin under the 3-error limit

Frequently asked questions
- How many questions are in the Spanish ADR basic test?
- Spanish training centres consistently report 30 multiple-choice questions, with a maximum of 3 errors allowed. The cisternas and explosivos extension tests are widely reported as 20 questions each, with a maximum of 2 errors. The DGT does not publish the format on its information pages.
- Who issues the ADR authorisation in Spain and where is the test taken?
- The Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT). After an approved ADR course you book the theory test by appointment at any Jefatura or Oficina de Tráfico.
- What do I need before I can apply for the Spanish ADR authorisation?
- At least a category B driving licence held for one year or more, an approved ADR course, psychophysical fitness, normal residence in Spain and no court ban on driving.
- Can I add tanks, explosives or radioactive material later?
- Yes. Each extension (cisternas, explosivos, radiactivos) needs a valid basic ADR authorisation, its own specialist course and its own test.
