The Careem interview, in brief
Careem is the Dubai-headquartered super-app for the Middle East, North Africa and Pakistan — ride-hailing and mobility, delivery, and Careem Pay. The Gulf's first tech unicorn, now owned by Uber but run independently, it puts engineers on region-scale marketplace, maps/geospatial and payments systems at an Uber-adjacent engineering bar. The loop rewards fast, clean problem-solving and a genuine sense of ownership.
A typical funnel is an online coding assessment (usually on Codility) as the screening gate, a recruiter screen, a technical phone screen, then a virtual/on-site loop of roughly three to four rounds — two coding rounds plus system design (LLD and, for seniors, HLD). A hiring-manager round and an independent bar-raiser / leadership round close it out, weighing values and ownership. Referrals can skip the initial assessment.

System design
For SDE I, design is light or absent. From SDE II up, expect both a low-level design (object-model a social/marketplace feature such as posts and follow/unfollow) and a high-level design flavoured by Careem's domain: a geospatial nearby-search service (Yelp-style) or a ride-dispatch/matching system where the matching algorithm and scale are the focus.
Behavioural round
Careem publishes six values (its "Ways of Working"): Owner, not employee; To the moon and beyond; Every experience matters; Committed to developing each other; Responsible for our communities; and Building a lasting institution. The hiring-manager and bar-raiser rounds assess these with STAR stories — culture and ownership are explicitly a gate, not a formality.

How to prepare
Do
- Grind Blind 75 and be fast and clean on easy-medium problems — speed and correctness beat exotic algorithms here.
- For senior loops, prepare one geospatial nearby-search HLD, one ride-dispatch/matching HLD, and a solid LLD framework.
- Prepare values-based STAR stories mapped to the six values — the hiring manager and bar-raiser weigh culture heavily.
- Treat the Codility assessment seriously: it screens on speed and edge cases even at "medium" difficulty.
Avoid
- Over-preparing obscure DSA while under-preparing system design and behavioural rounds.
- Treating values/culture fit as a formality — it can sink an otherwise strong loop.
- Generic system-design answers that ignore Careem's marketplace, geospatial and payments constraints.
Who can apply
Careem uses an SDE-style ladder (SDE I → SDE II → Senior → Staff → Principal), aligned to Uber's levels after migrating from an MTS scheme. New grads can enter via Careem Next Gen, a ~1-year graduate programme in Pakistan, Jordan and Egypt; most standard postings target experienced hires. No official CGPA cutoff is published.
