The Zoho interview, in brief

Zoho is a bootstrapped Indian product company known for hiring strong problem-solvers from all backgrounds — including non-CS and Tier-2/3 colleges — and its interview is deliberately coding-first and background-blind. The heart of the process is two programming rounds where candidates write complete working programs from scratch, often without relying on library functions, followed by a fundamentals-focused technical interview and a light, conversational HR round.

A written aptitude / programming-aptitude test (quant, logical, and C/C++/SQL output-prediction — written, not pure MCQ, usually with no negative marking) gates the loop, then a Basic Programming round (write several full programs), an Advanced Programming round (build a small applied mini-app), a technical interview (fundamentals + your own programs), and an HR round.

System design

Zoho does not run a formal distributed system-design round for its core developer hiring. The design signal comes instead from the Advanced Programming round — how cleanly you structure a small applied application (data model, storage, validation, features) — and from object-oriented and DBMS questions in the technical interview.

Behavioural round

Zoho's HR round is light and conversational — a genuine fit and stability check rather than a stress test. Expect "why Zoho", "why a product company", long-term plans, willingness to learn and relocate, and a real situation where you overcame a difficulty. Honesty and a learning mindset matter more than polish; Zoho hires strong problem-solvers regardless of college tier or degree branch.

Who can apply

Campus and off-campus new grads across engineering and non-CS backgrounds (Zoho explicitly hires from Tier-2/3 colleges and via its Zoho Schools of Learning), for Software Developer / Member Technical Staff roles. Strong from-scratch coding and CS fundamentals are the core requirement — college pedigree is not.

Zoho interview FAQ

Does Zoho hire from non-CS or Tier-2/3 colleges?
Yes — Zoho is well known for hiring strong problem-solvers regardless of college tier or degree branch, including non-CS candidates and through its Zoho Schools of Learning. The interview is coding-first and background-blind: it scores your reasoning and code, not your pedigree.
What are Zoho's Basic and Advanced programming rounds?
Basic Programming asks you to write several full working programs from scratch (patterns, strings, arrays, matrices, recursion), often without built-in functions. Advanced Programming asks you to build a small applied mini-app — a railway-reservation system, a mail server, or a mini bank — with storage, validation, and multiple features.
Is Zoho's coding done on pen and paper?
It varies by drive — some rounds are pen-and-paper and some are on a machine. Either way the emphasis is on correct logic written from scratch, so practise coding without leaning on library functions or an IDE's autocomplete.
Is Zoho's HR round hard?
No — it is light and conversational, a genuine fit and stability check. It covers motivation, willingness to learn and relocate, and a real difficulty you overcame. Honesty and a learning mindset matter more than a polished pitch.
