The Morgan Stanley interview, in brief

Morgan Stanley is a global investment bank whose Technology division is one of the largest in finance, with tens of thousands of technologists building trading, risk, wealth-management and real-time data platforms. Engineers target it for low-latency and large-scale financial systems, strong graduate/analyst training, and the stability of a top-tier bank with serious in-house engineering.

The graduate Technology Analyst Program is the flagship entry route. A typical funnel is an online assessment (HackerRank — coding plus CS-fundamentals/aptitude), a technical phone screen, a "Superday" of two to four back-to-back rounds (further coding, OOP/OOD and CS-fundamentals, a project/resume deep-dive, and behavioural), and a hiring-manager / HR round. Experienced hires follow a similar technical-plus-values loop.

System design

For new-grad/analyst roles, expect low-level design / OOD rather than large distributed design — model classes for a domain (an order system, elevator, parking lot, deck of cards) with clean OOP, SOLID and patterns. Experienced hires get true system design with the firm's flavour: low-latency/real-time financial systems, trade/order processing, market-data feeds, concurrency and messaging.

Behavioural round

Rounds map to Morgan Stanley's five Core Values — Do the Right Thing, Put Clients First, Lead with Exceptional Ideas, Commit to Diversity & Inclusion, and Give Back. A common explicit question is which core value resonates most with you. Behavioural weight is high (sometimes paired with a HireVue-style video round), probing integrity, handling pressure, teamwork, conflict, and why-Morgan-Stanley / why-finance-tech.

Who can apply

Graduate entry is the Technology Analyst Program (new-grad Analyst), progressing Analyst → Associate → Vice President → Executive Director → Managing Director — the bank-wide title ladder that also applies to technologists. Experienced hires enter at Associate/VP+ by scope. Internships (Technology Summer Analyst) feed the full-time pipeline.

Morgan Stanley interview FAQ

What is on the Morgan Stanley online assessment?
Typically a HackerRank test of about 90–120 minutes with roughly three sections: aptitude/CS-fundamentals MCQs (quant, logical/verbal reasoning, OS/DBMS/CN/OOP, output-prediction), a debugging section, and two to three coding problems. The exact mix varies by year and region.
Is Morgan Stanley's interview only about coding?
No — distinctively, it emphasises breadth: quantitative/aptitude reasoning and CS-fundamentals MCQs alongside coding, plus OOP/OOD. Preparing only LeetCode leaves gaps.
What is the Superday?
A graduate-hiring format where two to four interviews are compressed into one day — further coding, OOP/OOD and CS-fundamentals, a project deep-dive, and behavioural/values rounds.
What are Morgan Stanley's Core Values?
Do the Right Thing, Put Clients First, Lead with Exceptional Ideas, Commit to Diversity & Inclusion, and Give Back. A common question is which one resonates most with you, with particular weight on integrity.
