The Zomato interview, in brief

Zomato (parent company now Eternal Ltd.) runs a classic Indian product-company software-engineer loop — an online assessment, a DSA-heavy technical round, a machine-coding / low-level-design round, and a managerial/culture round — very much in the Flipkart/Swiggy mould. It weighs architectural thinking early: even at SDE-1 you are expected to design and build real-world systems, not just grind algorithms.

An online assessment (DSA plus CS-fundamentals MCQs) is followed by a DSA technical round (the main filter, with a project deep-dive), a machine-coding / LLD round (build a runnable mini-system), a system-design (HLD) round for SDE-2+, and a managerial / final round — often with a senior engineer, EM, or VP.

System design

For new grad / SDE-1, the machine-coding / LLD round is central — a live, runnable OOP design (design patterns, clean abstractions, extensibility), with HLD lighter or scoped. For experienced / SDE-2+, full HLD — scalability, real-time processing, and distributed design at food-delivery scale — plus LLD. Expect to actually reason about compiling code in the machine-coding round, not just diagrams.

Behavioural round

There is no named "values interview". The final/managerial round centres on ownership, product thinking, and culture fit — often with a senior or VP interviewer. STAR is useful, but the emphasis is on genuine project ownership and technical depth rather than a formal framework.

Zomato interview FAQ

What is Zomato's machine-coding round?
A 60–75 minute round where you design and implement a working mini-system live — clean class design, OOP, design patterns, and extensibility. Zomato weights architectural thinking early, so even SDE-1 candidates face it.
Is Zomato's interview like Flipkart's and Swiggy's?
Yes — it follows the classic Indian product-company loop: an OA, a DSA-heavy round, a machine-coding / LLD round, and an ownership-focused managerial round, with HLD for SDE-2+.
Is Zomato now called Eternal?
Zomato's parent company is Eternal Ltd. (which also owns Blinkit, Hyperpure, and District). Some interview experiences appear under the Eternal name; the SDE hiring process is the same.
How hard is Zomato's DSA?
Solidly LeetCode-medium — arrays, hashing, strings, recursion, sliding window, trees, graphs, and dynamic programming — with time/space complexity expected, alongside SQL/NoSQL and networking discussion.
