HCLTech Graduate Engineer Trainee (Fresher) Interview

The HCLTech interview, in brief

HCLTech hires engineering freshers primarily through its Graduate Engineer Trainee (GET) program, onboarding them into its GenC training track before deployment on client projects. It is one of India's largest-volume fresher recruiters across technology, engineering, cloud, and cybersecurity. Separately, HCLTech runs TechBee — an early-careers program that hires students straight after Class 12 — which is a distinct pathway, not the engineering-graduate route.

A pre-placement talk is followed by an online written assessment (adaptive; aptitude + computer fundamentals + coding), then a technical interview covering core CS and résumé projects, and an HR interview on fit, communication, and logistics.

Interview rounds

• 1. Online written assessment Adaptive
  Three aptitude sections (numerical, verbal, reasoning), a computer-programming MCQ section (basics, DS, OOP, output prediction), and a coding section of ~2 problems in C/C++/Java/Python.
• 2. Technical interview Panel
  DSA basics, the OOP pillars, DBMS/SQL basics, OS fundamentals, basic networking, your language, and a deep dive on résumé projects.
• 3. HR interview Fit & logistics
  Motivation ("Why HCLTech?"), relocation across India, rotational/night shifts, and document verification.

Coding & DSA topics

System design

Not part of fresher hiring. The technical round stays at core-CS depth — the OOP pillars with examples, a basic SQL query, and a simple DSA operation — rather than system design.

Behavioural round

The HR round assesses communication, adaptability, and stability — "why HCLTech?", strengths and weaknesses, teamwork, willingness to relocate anywhere in India, comfort with rotational/night shifts, flexibility on role and location, and acknowledgment of the training/probation period.

Representative question categories

Patterns in HCLTech’s style — not verbatim proprietary questions.

• Arithmetic word problems — Time & work, pipes & cisterns, speed-distance-time, HCF/LCM.
• Reasoning puzzles — Coding-decoding, blood relations, direction sense, data sufficiency.
• "Predict the output" — Small C/C++/Java snippets testing pointers, loops, and OOP behaviour.
• Coding — String manipulation, array processing, a simple pattern/number problem.
• Interview — CS fundamentals — OOP pillars, DBMS/SQL basics, OS fundamentals.
• HR — "Why HCLTech?", relocation across India, and rotational-shift flexibility.

How to prepare

Do

• The online test is adaptive — accuracy on early questions matters, so read carefully.
• Prepare "predict the output" questions on pointers, loops, and operator precedence.
• Be able to explain the four OOP pillars with an example and write a basic SQL query.
• Know your résumé cold — HCLTech probes "explain this line on your resume".

Avoid

• Confusing the GET engineering route with the TechBee school-leaver program.
• Neglecting output-prediction and CS-fundamentals MCQs.
• Being vague about relocation or shifts in the HR round.

Who can apply

B.E./B.Tech (CSE, IT, ECE, EEE and allied); norms commonly cite ~70–75% (or ~6.5–7.0 CGPA) consistently across 10th, 12th, diploma and UG, with no standing backlogs and pan-India mobility. Batch-year and exact cutoffs vary by drive. (TechBee is a separate program for Class-12 pass-outs.)
