The LinkedIn interview, in brief
LinkedIn is the world's largest professional-networking platform (a Microsoft subsidiary since 2016, but it hires and interviews under its own process and engineering culture). It runs a large, product-focused engineering org spanning feed/graph, search, messaging, ads and data/ML at hundreds-of-millions-of-members scale. Engineers target it for high-scale distributed-systems work and a strong, values-driven culture.
A typical funnel is a recruiter screen, a technical phone screen (one or two coding problems on a shared editor), and a virtual/on-site loop of four to five interviews: two coding rounds, one or two system-design rounds (scaling with seniority), and at least one dedicated behavioural/values round. Distinctively, LinkedIn weights the behavioural round heavily and ties it to its values — a genuine gate.

System design
Expected for mid-level and above (lightweight LLD may appear for new grads). LinkedIn's domain drives the prompts: designing a news/activity feed, the connections/social graph and "people you may know", search/typeahead, or messaging/notifications — with data modelling, sharding, caching and consistency/latency trade-offs. Senior candidates drive API design, data modelling, bottleneck analysis and scaling end-to-end.
Behavioural round
LinkedIn's behavioural round is unusually prominent and maps to its published values — Members First, Relationships Matter, Be Open Honest and Constructive, Demand Excellence, Take Intelligent Risks, and Act Like an Owner. Expect STAR-format questions on ownership, prioritization, cross-team collaboration, handling conflict, mentorship and "why LinkedIn". Strong technical performance can still be sunk by a weak values read.

How to prepare
Do
- Grind the LinkedIn-tagged LeetCode list; drill tries, graphs and trees specifically.
- Treat the behavioural round as a real gate — prepare four to six STAR stories mapped to the actual values.
- Narrate trade-offs and test your code on edge cases before saying "done", then drive the optimization.
- For design, anchor answers in LinkedIn's own domain (feed/graph/search) and quantify scale.
Avoid
- Underpreparing the behavioural round — strong coders get rejected on weak or generic values answers.
- Producing brute-force code and not driving the optimization/complexity discussion.
- In system design, jumping to components without clarifying scale, data model and requirements.
- Not tailoring "why LinkedIn" or ignoring the members-first framing.

The public IC ladder runs roughly Software Engineer (entry) → Senior Software Engineer → Staff → Senior Staff → Principal, then Distinguished/Fellow. New-grad and experienced tracks both exist; internships feed the new-grad pipeline. Exact level codes are not officially published. Higher levels weight system design and scope more heavily.
